How to Become a Police Officer in California

To answer the question how to become a police officer in California, let’s go through the key points one by one.
What Education is Required at Basic and Higher Levels?

You need to be a graduate of a US high school, or something of the equivalent, or have a CHSPE certificate (California High School Proficiency Examination). That said, if you have a two-year or four-year long college degree gained at either a US college or univesity elsewhere, then that is perfectly adequate regardless high school education.

Any Particular Citizenship Required?

To be considered for the California police, it is a requirement that you should either be a US citizen, or that you be a permanent resident to the US. Should you be a non-citizen of the US, it is necessary that during the selection process, proof is provided that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have accepted your application previous to when the written examination for Police Officer was originally taken. That said, it is not necessary to be a resident of Los Angeles to apply to the LAPD to work as an officer of the law.

Candidates Background

The potential candidate who wishes to become a police officer for the California Police Department must prove they have a history of the highest moral and ethical behavior. Anyone who is found to have otherwise will not be suitable for the Department. There will be a thorough check of your character, which includes the following:

* your history and track record must reflect lawful conduct throughout

* all financial and driving records need to show appropriate behavior and responsible decision making

* any previous employment history must demonstrate a drive to succeed and thus show strength of character which is suitable for the police department

* a history showing responsible decision making with regards to alcohol and drugs is a must

* a respect for the rights of all men and women is a pre-requisite and an appreciation for the diverse culture of California is necessary. Any agressive history such as domestic violence, dicourteous behavior, abusive or violent treatment towards others or various other physical altercations may well be seen as lack of self-discipline or a disregards for the rights of other human beings.

* a demonstration of high standards when it comes to integrity and honesty. Any falsification within the application process to the California Police Department will be seen as grounds for your application’s dismissal.

In order to help you determine whether your own background is suitable enough to the California Police Department you can use the Preliminary Background Application (PBA). Should there be any particular issues that you are unsure about, you can contact a Case Manager to discuss your personal circumstances further.
